Semester "Test" Speech
Semester testing schedule
- 1st period - Monday, December 22, 10:00-11:30
- 7th period - Tuesday, December 23, 8:15-9:50
- For your semester test grade, you will be giving a holiday themed speech. Speeches will all absolutely be given before you leave for winter break. We will begin during the class period immediately prior to your semester testing block and finish during the block - as long as it takes.
Requirements
- Pick a holiday
- This link includes all holidays in 2014. The holiday you will speak about must be on this list but you cannot chose the following "holidays" from the list: Super Bowl Sunday, Daylight Saving Time, Spring Equinox, Summer Solstice, Fall Equinox, Winter Solstice, Black Friday
- http://www.no-frillscalendar.com/2014/2014holist.html
- Two or more students may choose the same holiday but will need to make sure their type and plan for the speech is different
- Pick a type of speech
- Think of the speeches you've given this semester. Which one was most comfortable for you? Which one did you get an A? Which one was most interesting/fun for you or the audience?
- You may choose any type of speech for your final speech - to inform, to persuade, to demonstrate, to entertain, to sell...
- Semester speeches will be between five (5) and eight (8) minutes long. You will lose points if you are not within this time range.
- Type an outline including introduction, body, and conclusion to turn in on the day of your speech
- Use a minimum of two (2) sources
- Create a Works Cited page - please use easybib.com to do this correctly so you don't miss unnecessary points
- Create a visual aid to assist you in giving your speech - see below
- At the podium you will be allowed one (1) ONE notecard
- TURN IN/EMAIL - outline, works cited, note card, visual aid (if applicable) on the day of your speech
Ideas
- Demonstrate how to wrap a Christmas present
- Inform us on the history of Saint Patrick's Day and how it's celebrated in Ireland and beyond
- Persuade us that the Easter Bunny is real or false
- Entertain us with fun facts and celebration practices about Independence Day
- Sell us one of the top ten toys to buy for 2013 holidays
- Demonstrate how to carve a pumpkin
- Inform us of the meaning of putting flowers on graves for Memorial Day
- Persuade us to plant trees on Arbor or Earth Day
- Entertain us with April Fools jokes (more than just jokes, though)
Visual Aid
- Choose or create wisely.
- Showing the visual aid does count towards your time limit of 5-8 minutes.
- A video should not just repeat what you say in your speech, nor should the video do all the talking for you.
- If you show a video, you should speak longer than it does.
- A poster or powerpoint should include great information/graphics you can show during your speech.
- A few of you have run into the problem of showing your visual aid at the very end as an afterthought.
- It would be BEST if your visual aid was WITHIN the speech so that you can lead us into it, take us out of it, and still have a solid conclusion at the end of your speech.
- Prepare your visual aid early so you can practice with it to know if you are within time.
For your outline, go directly to that type of speech page to grab that specific outline.
